With the glorious brilliant green rolling hills and fragrant wildflowers in Irvine, California, we are reminded that spring is a celebration of new beginnings. This is especially true for our students who will graduate in several months from our undergraduate and graduate programs of study. It is an honor to watch our students leave us with having received cutting edge knowledge and skills in our innovative programs, delivered by faculty steeped in demonstrating quality and compassionate health care delivery to many diverse populations in Orange County. As you will continue to read, this includes working in our communities with populations who experience homelessness, mental health concerns, and health disparities. Diversity is an increasing focus in our School, including our faculty who are being recognized for promoting equity, diversity and inclusiveness as demonstrated by our Health Sciences Professor, Leah Centanni, a Family Nurse Practitioner who works at the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Santa Ana.

Research is flourishing at the UCI School of Nursing, both locally and globally. Over 80% of our senate faculty are currently funded by NIH or similar awards, grant submissions have significantly increased, and K awards and predoctoral award scores are promising. Dr. Holman, a preeminent behavioral scholar, not only was recently recognized as a Fellow of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, but even more recently, was inducted into the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research. Clearly, our science is leading to innovative healthcare solutions in populations that are local and global.

Research engagement by our students has been increasing. One example is that our Master’s student, Emily Tomich, recently presented a poster at the California Tuberculosis Controllers Association (CTCA) Conference that described her participation in the development of identifying and treating LTBI in the community. We are extremely grateful to the Philanthropic support that is provided to the School, and for students like Emily, allow them to thrive.

Finally, advocating for ongoing support for the next generation of nursing workforce is front and center in our efforts. These include efforts to promote Title VIII Workforce Reauthorization funds and to restore proposed cuts to NIH funding.

I invite you to read through our spring newsletter and hope you enjoy learning more about the School of Nursing’s latest achievements and successes.
