Recap: Speculative Ethics for Care Futures Otherwise
The UC Irvine Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing Center for Nursing Philosophy, the Public Interest Technology Initiative at University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the Charité Universitätsmedizin were pleased to co-sponsor this multidisciplinary virtual colloquium titled “Speculative ethics for care futures otherwise.”
The colloquium, held Friday October 13, 2023, featured Goda Klumbytė (she/her), researcher at the Participatory IT Design department at the University of Kassel in Germany and Brianne Donaldson, Associate professor of Religious Studies and Shri Parshvanath Presidential Chair in Jain Studies at University of California, Irvine USA. Zakkiyah Iman Jackson, Associate Professor of English and Director of the Center for Feminist Research at the University of Southern California, was unfortunately unable to join the colloquium, yet her work influenced how the colloquium was shaped.
Dr. Jess Dillard-Wright (assistant professor, University of Massachusetts, Amherst) and Dr. Jamie Smith (research associate, Charité Universitätsmedizin, Germany) introduced the topic of speculative ethics, an area of thought to challenge received notions of ethics by, for, and in nursing and other disciplines.
Goda Klumbytė spoke on Speculative ethics and the algorithmic condition. Brianne Donaldson spoke on Between the now and not yet of mutually-requiring dualities. Zakiyyah Iman Jackson was slated to speak on Race and the Fictions of Sovereign Embodiment.
The colloquium had 82 registrants from across the globe. The talks were followed by a lively Q&A session. If you missed it, you can view the event by clicking on the link below.
