associate professors jung-ah lee and miriam bender new fellows in the american academy of nursing 2020

Associate Professors Jung-Ah Lee, left, and Miriam Bender are fellows in the American Academy of Nursing.

The American Academy of Nursing announced the selection of 225 distinguished nurse leaders to be inducted into the 2021 Class of Fellows.

Associate Professors Miriam Bender and Jung-Ah Lee are among those who have been chosen for the prestigious honor, along with UCI Health nurse manager Sonia Valdez, and former UCI nursing faculty members Beth Haney and Perry Gee.

The new class will be recognized for their significant contributions to health and healthcare at the academy’s annual Health Policy Conference on Oct. 7-9, 2021.

“I am thrilled to welcome another exceptional class of fellows to the American Academy of Nursing during a momentous time of change and progress in our collective efforts to fulfill the organization’s vision of healthy lives for all people,” said Academy President Eileen Sullivan-Marx, PhD, RN, FAAN.

Leaders in their field

Bender is the director of the Center for Nursing Philosophy, the only academic unit for philosophical scholarship in the United States.

The center is connected to the larger international nursing philosophy community, which seeks to support philosophical inquiry into nursing and healthcare practice, theory, research, education and policy.

She currently serves as associate editor of the Journal Nursing Philosophy

Bender is also leading a nationally-funded $1.3 million study that examines the implementation and effectiveness of the clinical nurse leader model in improving patient safety and care quality.

Lee was recently named a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America. She is the principal investigator on a $3.6 million National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute on Aging (NIA) research project to implement a home-based, culturally and language specific caregiving intervention for underserved dementia family caregivers.

“Miriam and Jung-Ah are nursing leaders and visionaries. It’s an honor to work alongside them,” Founding dean and Distinguished Professor Adey Nyamathi says.

UCI faculty fellows

Bender and Lee will join eight other UCI nursing faculty in the academy:

UCI Health:

  • Sonia Valdez, DNP

Former faculty:

  • Beth Haney, DNP
  • Perry Gee, PhD

How fellows are selected

The Academy’s Fellow Selection Committee, consisting of current fellows, reviewed hundreds of applications. They chose the 2021 fellows based on their contributions to advancing the public’s health.

Induction into the Academy is a significant milestone in a nurse leader’s career, in which their accomplishments are honored by their colleagues within and outside the profession.
