Our weekly Alumni Spotlight series features updates on the outstanding graduates of the UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing. Jeffrey Liu, class of ’19, shares what it was like to be a nurse working in a pandemic.
Where do you work?
Loma Linda University Medical Center
What is your title?
Clinical nurse
How has COVID-19 impacted your life?
Isolation, a lot less social interaction with friends and family, especially in November and December when my unit turned into a COVID unit. The only social interaction I had at that time was with coworkers at work. I had to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas alone.
What initially drew you to the nursing profession?
A patient-nurse relationship. A relationship that builds on trust and understanding. Nurses often know their patients more than any other healthcare professional because we spend half the day with them, not only learning about their medical condition, but also their family, life experiences, etc. The privilege to care for others in their times of need.
