UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing congratulates our own Vianh Hoang, incoming senior nursing student, for receiving the Jennie V. and Marie Cook Scholarship from Orange County Community Foundation! The $5000 scholarship is for students majoring in Engineering, Health Sciences or Science. Requirements for the scholarship include maintaining a high GPA and a history of active community service.

Vianh says that she was inspired to go into the nursing field by her mom, a Certified Nursing Assistant. “Every day at dinner, my mom would share stories about her fulfilling experiences with her patients and the bonds she formed with them,” says Vianh. “My mom always had the best things to say about her job, even when she was exhausted from an especially tiring day. Regardless of her physical strain, she always put her struggles aside and put her family and her patients above herself. My mom’s compassion and dedication taught me what it means to truly care for others. Being able to promote the well-being of others while forming special bonds is a truly unique experience, and it’s why I fell in love with nursing.”

Professor Jung-Ah Lee has supervised Vianh in both research and clinical settings, and has high praise for Vianh. “Vianh has shown great passion in older adult care and research on chronic disease management in older adults with dementia/Alzheimer’s and their families,” says Lee. “I have been very impressed with her enthusiasm and desire to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills to be an exceptional nurse.”

In the future, Vianh would like to pursue a specialty in surgical nursing. “I hope to work in the operating room one day to expand my knowledge of the human body and to help develop new advances in surgical procedures,” she says. “Nursing is something I can see myself doing for the rest of my life.”
