published paper argues that nursing education needs to incorporate queer educationA paper recently published in the Journal of Professional Nursing examines how nurses can prepare to provide safe, non-judgmental care to the queer community.

The paper was authored by Assistant Professor Candace W. Burton, PhD, and nursing school graduate Kevin Nolasco, RN, along with Dave Holmes, PhD, faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The authors contend that “the LBGTQIA+ community has a long history of marginalization, disenfranchisement and structural violence within the healthcare sector.”

The solution proposed is consideration of how care is delivered to the queer community in nursing education. The paper provides nursing educators with both the background and specific tools to guide students in developing their capacity to address the needs of this vulnerable group.
