Senior Associate Dean and Professor

Biography

Dr. Susanne Phillips has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and spent the first part of her nursing career in the acute setting, caring for patients across the lifespan in the emergency care unit in Southern California. That experience led her back to California State University Long Beach to complete a Master of Science degree in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner concentration. From there she served Orange County’s most vulnerable populations at two community clinics before starting a nurse-managed health care center, Pacific Family Wellness Center in Irvine, California. In 1998, she joined the faculty at the UCI Post-Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner Program, educating nurse practitioner students within the Department of Family Medicine. Throughout her career as an educator and a family nurse practitioner, she has been directly involved in the development and implementation of the UCI Program in Nursing Science, now the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing. She teaches across the nursing programs at UCI, with a specialization in Health Policy and Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice. She has taught applied and advanced pharmacology over her 25-year service at UCI as well as most courses in the Family Nurse Practitioner concentration and DNP Program. From 2005 – 2009, Dr. Phillips served as a member of the California Board of Registered Nursing, serving as Vice President and President of the Board during that time. She graduated with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Yale University School of Nursing in Leadership and Policy and has numerous academic awards and publications. She is passionate about educating compassionate, humanistic nursing care providers.
