The NURSE-OC RN Externship is a comprehensive, year-long program designed for final-year prelicensure nursing students to bridge the gap between academic learning and clinical practice. In partnership with UCI Health, this program equips future nurses with the skills, experience, and confidence needed to thrive in today’s complex healthcare environment
Program Highlights
- Clinical Training: 400 hours of hands-on experience in UCI Health departments such as telemetry, step-down units, oncology, and critical care.
- Didactic Instruction: 30 hours of classroom-based learning covering patient care, evidence-based practices, leadership, and interprofessional collaboration.
- Community Engagement: Participation in health initiatives aligned with CalOptima’s CalAIM, preparing externs to serve vulnerable populations across Orange County.
- Professional Development & Mentorship: Ongoing support through structured mentorship, quarterly check-ins, and personalized guidance.
- Post-Program Commitment: A 2-year work agreement with a CalOptima-affiliated institution ensures a smooth transition into practice and continued mentorship.

The NURSE-OC RN Externship is exclusively open to final-year pre-licensure nursing students enrolled at the UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing in either:
- The Master’s Entry Program in Nursing (MEPN)
- The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSNS) program
Applicants must also meet the following criteria:
- Completion of foundational nursing courses and clinical rotations
- Strong academic standing and a demonstrated interest in community health
- Ability to commit to the full externship year and a 2-year post-program work agreement in Orange County, California
