The Center for Nursing Philosophy (CNP) launched in 2019 with the two-fold mission of (a) creating a formal structure with the capacity and resources to engage school, university, and allied institutions’ faculty in dialogue across the philosophical spectrum and (b) leading the advancement of nursing philosophy by supporting faculty and student scholarly collaboration, publication, and dissemination.
The CNP reached its 5-year milestone in 2024, and as per UC Irvine school center policy, required an evaluation. The results of this evaluation were presented to the Dean of the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, who re-approved the CNP for another 5-year term and a concomitant operating budget beginning January 2025.
The evaluation of the CNP highlighted its accomplishments, particularly in scholarly productivity, academic leadership, and cross-institutional engagement. The CNP has emerged as a unique space for advancing nursing philosophy, generating a volume of peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and public events. The Center has built an international reputation and successfully filled a critical gap in nursing philosophy education, particularly in the United States. Its initiatives, such as the philosophical writing workshops and mentorship programs, have made an impact on the academic development of scholars. Additionally, the CNP has demonstrated efficiency in operating with limited funding, achieving substantial results through strategic leadership and collaboration.
To maintain and expand the CNP’s impact over the next five years, several key strategies have been identified to ensure its sustainability. These include securing more robust institutional and external financial supports and broadening its outreach to new target audiences and growing its mentorship opportunities. We welcome your thoughts on how to strengthen the CNP’s offerings and outreach; please feel free to reach out to the director, Miriam Bender, at any time!
