Associate Professor Miriam Bender has been appointed co-editor in chief of the international journal Nursing Philosophy.
She shares the role with Professor Stefanos Mantzoukas of the University of Ioannina in Greece. Together, they will work with a team of editors and the editorial review board to evaluate manuscript submissions and make publication decisions.
Bender is a leader in nursing philosophy in the United States, having established the Center for Nursing Philosophy in 2020 — the country’s only center dedicated to philosophical discourse of the nursing profession.
Her vision is to connect philosophers from nursing and other disciplines from around the world to generate new insights that advance nursing’s understanding of itself and its influence on health and the healthcare system.
“Nurses care for people when they encounter life’s greatest problems and questions. Oftentimes, however, we nurses do not think about the implications of being there for others at such pivotal times,” says Mark Lazenby, nursing dean and professor. “The Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing is proud that Associate Professor Miriam Bender, who is also the director of the school’s Center for Nursing Philosophy, has been named the co-editor-in-chief of Nursing Philosophy, the profession’s international journal that publishes articles that help nurses understand and articulate the philosophy behind their care.”
Nursing Philosophy is the official journal of the International Philosophy of Nursing Society (IPONS).
