Candace Burton, PhD, has received the 2019 Journal of Forensic Nursing Education Article of the Year Award for an article she and two external colleagues wrote about the importance of incorporating trauma-informed care into BSN education.
“Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) Education in Baccalaureate Nursing Curricula in the United States: Applying the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials” was selected for the award for its innovation, significance, approach, potential impact, and overall writing.
Such knowledge enables nurses in any setting to identify traumatized individuals, then intervene and create a continuum of care when forensic nursing services are necessary.
Having more TIC-prepared nurses will make it possible for nurses to recognize and meet the needs of those affected. Burton’s article suggests ways of incorporating TIC content into nursing programs.
Burton says TIC is increasingly important as reports of domestic violence soar with people sheltering at home.
“The incorporation of TIC into nursing education will be especially important as our graduates go out into the post-pandemic world. Our patients and our colleagues will be more likely to have suffered trauma. We must prepare to work in this changed world.”
