Virgin River author Robyn Carr with UCI Health pediatric pulmonologist Dr. Dan Cooper and UCI Sue & Bill School of Nursing Dean Adey Nyamathi.

How Robyn Carr, the New York Times best-selling author of Virgin River, came to speak at the UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing is a matter of happenstance.

One day, UCI pediatric pulmonologist Dr. Dan Cooper was enjoying an afternoon of binge television watching. He landed on a new series on Netflix: Virgin River.

The show centers on Mel, a nurse practitioner from Los Angeles, who takes a job in a small Northern California town. But she meets resistance: The mayor wants Mel to work with the town’s aging doctor, who isn’t having it.

To persuade the doctor, the mayor notes that Mel graduated at the top of her class from UCI!

UCI retiree and nurse Maureen Zehtner presents Robyn Carr with a UCI Nursing T-shirt.

Like our UCI nurses, Mel is uncompromising in her passion and bravery to care for community members when they need us most.

The nursing school reached out to Carr and they found that her love for the nursing profession runs deep. She is educated as a nurse and her childrens’ births were attended by a midwife.

As a result, Carr knows the powerful role a nurse can play in so many aspects of a person’s life. She shared her thoughts and experiences with an audience of 150 attendees.

Thanks to the support of community and nursing alumni, the event has led to the creation of the first Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) endowment fund.

Please consider supporting our students through our DNP endowment.

Our DNP students are professional nurses who are returning to school to seek the highest level of nursing excellence.

The DNP endowment will enable the School of Nursing to support students through scholarships.
