South Orange County Senior Day 2018, featuring experts from UCI MIND, answered questions on healthy brain aging. A team of nurses, led by Bernie Milbury, MSN, RN, ANP-BC, OCN, Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, provided free medical screenings and informative resources for all attendees. The event, hosted by state Sen. Pat Bates and Assemblyman Bill Brough, took place March 9, at the Norman P. Murray Senior Center in Mission Viejo. This year marks the third year in a row the school of nursing has been invited to participate in this valuable community event.

“Led by our own Professor Bernie Milbury, the South Orange County Senior Day illustrated both community engagement and intra-professional (MEPN + NP) education,” said Adey Nyamathi, Dean of the School of Nursing. “This type of community-professional collaboration makes all of us proud to be a part of UCI.”

Milbury added, “The real recognition and thank you go to the NP and MEPN students who attended the event and worked the different stations. They did more than 100 client blood pressure screenings, took height and weight measurements, and performed BMI and TUG testing for fall risk assessment.”

Second year UCI NP students who represented the School of Nursing and interacted with the seniors offering a variety of medical screenings included: Amal Hamdan, Manisha Ati, Courtney Galle and Diana Luna, and MEPN students: Chloe Purgason, Kelly Rodebush, Jacqueline Deniz and Katrina Lazarte.

“Our NP students were able to track clinical hours for this event, while the MEPN students volunteered for ‘experience’ as the compensation,” said Milbury. “We all enjoyed the event and time spent in South County.”
