Professor Miriam Bender Earns High Honors During 24th Annual Celebration of Teaching

Professor Miriam BenderAssistant Professor of Nursing Science Miriam Bender, PhD, RN, was one of 12 to receive the Dean’s Honoree Award during the 24th Annual Celebration of Teaching held May 4. Hosted by the Academic Council on Teaching, Learning and Student Experience, the Center for Engaged Instruction and the Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (OVPTL), the annual event reaffirms UCI’s passionate dedication to excellence in undergraduate teaching and highlights the impact undergraduate instructors make on students and on the university as a whole.

Dean Adey Nyamathi presented Bender with her award stating, “In the two years Miriam has been at UCI, she has already made a significant teaching impact on her students in both nursing and medicine. She has a passion for her discipline and her students, and a strong understanding of teaching theory that she has been able to translate into a teaching style that students overwhelmingly find stimulating, thought provoking and conducive to learning.”

Bender was unable to receive her award in person as she was participating in the 15th Quality Improvement Research Network workshop, held in Copenhagen, Denmark and run by Professor John Ovretveit from the Karolinska Institute. She then traveled to Linkoping, Sweden to give an invited presentation of Nyamathi’s research to the medical faculty at Linkoping University, at the invitation of Professor Anna Stromberg.
