NCIS: UCI (Nursing Camp in Summer)

Summer 2017

NCIS: UCI (Nursing Camp in Summer)

The Sue and Bill Gross School of Nursing launched its first summer camp for high school students in August. NCIS: UCI (Nursing Camp in Summer) was a weeklong camp introducing the nursing profession to high school students. A total of 28 students from as far as Hawaii and Northern California joined faculty and staff at the School of Nursing to participate in hands-on and didactic learning. Students were able to learn about the different career paths of a nurse, including BS licensed RN, Nurse Practitioner, and PhD researcher. Each day was filled with active learning, including participation in a simulation lab, observation in an ambulatory center, foundations in patient care, and CPR certification. During the week the students individually worked on their personal college statement and developed a community education project. The week concluded with each student presenting their community project to friends and family at a closing reception. For many of the students, the camp confirmed their career path into nursing.
